Brno, Feb 11 (BD) – In line with the city’s Crime Prevention Strategy for 2017-21, the city has allocated CZK 600,000 to support projects designed to help prevent crime in Brno that cannot be funded from the Crime Prevention Grant, which the city receives from the government. The Coordination Centre received 40 proposals to evaluate, and will decide which of them are to be implemented. Some of the projects will be implemented by the city, while others will be organised by the city police, district councils within the city, or municipal organisations.

One project will see senior citizens receive training on the types of dangerous situations they may encounter in the city, and how to defend themselves in those situations. Another project is the well-established Senior Academy, a series of lectures and presentations designed to give senior citizens skills related to crime prevention that they can then use working for non-governmental or non-profit organisations, or with the city police. This project will be running for the 14th time.

“Of course, I support the funding of such projects and I also support them personally. The example of the Senior Academy shows how they can be successful. It is a project that will help seniors make a meaningful contribution, and the city police are finding new volunteers through the program. I am glad that this can continue, as well as the other activities that will make the elderly feel safer,” said Markéta Vaňková, Mayor of Brno.

Other projects that will be supported by the city will include Brno Zoo’s Children and Youth Club, which is open to children between 8 and 18 from socially disadvantaged families and other at risk groups, and the Safer Cyberspace program, a project run by the Regional Directorate of the Czech Police to reduce dangers from the virtual world, part of which involves preventative discussions in schools.
