Brno, Feb 22 (BD) – A year since their deaths, around 500 people gathered in Brno’s city center to remember Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová. Commemorating their deaths, candles were lit, and speeches were made by activists and journalists.
Similar gatherings to commemorate Kuciak were organised, and took place in different European cities including Vienna, Berlin, Bratislava. According to Dennik N, over 25,000 people commemorated Kuciak’s death in Bratislava yesterday.
These gatherings were to pay tribute to their deaths and protest the corruption in the Slovak government, as Kuciak was an investigative journalist. Before Kuciak’s murder in his home near Bratislava, he was employed by Aktuality.sk, and wrote about tax frauds, and corrupt EU businessmen. His last article which was published posthumously was about the links between an Italian mafia, and the previous Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico – who resigned 3 weeks after Kuciak’s death due to mass demonstrations in Slovakia.
