Welcome to the new section “What’s Up in Brno?” – where every Sunday, we will offer you an overview of the city events for the next week! We list only English-friendly events, otherwise it is mentioned in the event description. Image credit: Casadei Graphics.

Brno, May 12 (BD) – Feed your mind and your body! Many cultural events will take place in Brno this week –  English friendly theater plays, Brno Museum Night, art exhibitions, street food, morning dances, a night marathon!

Start your week meeting new people on Monday, at Edunesco Language Blend. From 6:30 PM to 8 PM, you can practice foreign languages over a nice cup of coffee or tea, making new friends from all over the world. The entrance fee is CZK 100 and it includes beverages.

Go through 150 years of Brno sport history in the new exhibition “Branky Body Brno“ at Špilberk Castle. Come to its opening on May 15 at 5 PM. The exhibition will be accessible to the public until the end of December. More information can be found on the castle’s official website (only in Czech).

Come to enjoy good food on Freedom Square (Náměstí Svobody) from May 15 to 18! Restaurants, food trucks, regional vendors, beer and wine are waiting for you from 11 AM to 8 PM! The entrance is free-of-charge. Information is available on the Facebook event of the street food festival (only in Czech).

Get a new point of view on the world from Thursday to Friday at the Dark Blue Festival: an international music festival for visually impaired children and youth. From Thursday you can put yourself in a blind person’s shoes by having a coffee in complete darkness. On Friday at 2 PM you can listen to a performance by young visually impaired artists.

Have a killer laugh from outer space on Thursday, with The Gypsywood Players! From 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, the company will perform its newest comedy show Interplanetary Fake News at Buranteatr. What would happen if aliens invaded the Earth today? The tickets cost  CZK 150, and students can avail a discount and only pay CZK 100. As we mentioned in last week’s article, the “Week of the City” program (“Týden města”) is taking place in Brno until May 19. On Friday, come from 5 PM to 7 PM on Moravian Square (Moravské náměstí) to play with chalk. Don’t forget to bring your inner-child spirit! Here is the Facebook event (only in Czech).

In occasion of the Masaryk University Centennial, you can get to know Czech Folklore better on Friday! For the MUNIFESTO (the Masaryk University Centennial Film Festival, program) opening, come and listen to Moravian folklore performed by the singer Julia Ulehla, along with her interpretation of Vladimír Úlehla’s films, who is her great-grandfather, from 8 PM to 10 PM at the Univerzitní kino Scala. You can book your tickets for CZK 80 on muni.cz.

Hungry for theater and Czech culture? Jenůfa (Her Stepdaughter) is having its premier on Saturday at 7PM. It is translated by Barbara Day and performed by the Czech Theater (as mentioned in our previous article, Czech Theater Is Preparing Its Second Czech Play In English). The play is a piece of Czech realistic theater – finally available in English. Tickets start from CZK 100 and you can buy them online here.

Don’t let this pass by – on Saturday night, the doors of all themuseums in the city are open for Brno Museum Night! From 8 PM to 12 AM, many museums will host events, workshops and exhibitions available for all. Special bus lines will run throughout evening for free. Night parties are not enough for you anymore? On Saturday you can start your morning dancing at the Aurora Party. From 8 AM to 12 PM people who are not afraid of early wakes can gather at Pfeferonka Yoga Centrum, to dance and to express their energy. The entrance fee starts from CZK 200 – smoothies and breakfast are available for purchase at the bar.

Want to feel inspired? At the Forum of Women in Tech, top women from the tech industry will share their expertise and know-how on leading projects and teams in global IT companies. On Saturday, from 9:30 AM you can look forward to talks, panels, workshops, accompanying activities and an unforgettable after-party at Impact Hub.

Almost every week has a running event! Put on your sneakers on Saturday to attend the 6th edition of the NN NIGHT RUN Brno! The mayor of Brno, Markéta Vaňková will be attending the event along with Tomáš Zdechovskéhý, a European Parliament member. You can choose to run 5 or 10 kilometers, to run with your children or with your family, or to run for the breast cancer movement.
