Brno, Jun 14 (BD) – This weekend, people will have a chance to admire and ride the horse-drawn and steam trams on Náměstí Svobody (on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00).

The city’s public transport depot in Medlánky opened to the public in mid-May, allowing people to get a good look at the vehicles they use every day. This Saturday from 12:15 to 17:00, Brno Transport Company (DPMB) is opening its depot in Husovice.

The series of events celebrating this anniversary started in April.  On the last day of August, a street party with two festive parades of historic and current public transport vehicles will take place.

The first horse-drawn tram left the Moravian Square (Moravské náměstí) on August 17, 1869, and Brno thus happened to be the first city with public transport in the Czech lands, and third after Vienna and Budapest in Austro-Hungarian empire. The celebrations will be held under the auspices of Brno’s mayor. “It is undoubtedly one of Brno’s biggest and most important anniversaries this year. It is a reminder not only of the huge technical developments that have been made, but also the generations of people who have helped with the development and operation of Brno’s public transport,” said Vaňková.
