Brno, Jun 19 (BD) – At its Wednesday meeting, Brno City Council approved plans for the construction of a new cycle path, which will be built on the right bank of Brno Dam between Rakovec and Veveří Castle. In total, the city will build six kilometres of 3-metre-wide trails, including utility lines and the necessary modifications to the surrounding terrain.

“In recent years, cycling has increased significantly in Brno. The Dam in particular is a very popular area, not just with local but also tourists. A connection from Rakovec to the footbridge below Veveří Castle has been lacking for a long time,” explained Petr Kratochvíl, Council Member for Transport.

The South Moravian Region has begun rebuilding the II / 384 road in preparation for the route from Veveří Castle towards Brno. Last year, representatives of the Region and the City agreed a framework deal on cooperating in the coordination, preparation and implementation of the construction of the cycle path between Veveří Castle and the Svratecká Cycle Path at Rakovec.

The total cost of the project is estimated to be just under CZK 86 million, including property settlement and project preparation. There are three possible variants to the final bike path. Two differ only slightly in some sections, but the third would include a bridge over the Dam, increasing the total cost of the project by CZK 40 million.
