AMERICAN FOOTBALL

Brno Teams Face Off in Season-ending Rivalry Game

Though both teams are officially eliminated from the postseason, there is one final blowout game on the Paddock League schedule: the Battle of Brno II.

Or maybe it is known as the Brno Bowl. Or the Brno Backyard Brawl in Bystrc. Or the Svratka Shootout. Or maybe simply the Big (Brno) Game or, from the professional ranks, the Super (Brno) Bowl.

In any case, the Brno Sígrs and the Brno Alligators play each other for city bragging rights on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the field that they share, Ragby Bystrc.

Like many famous bowl games in America, everybody knows everybody, many played on teams with each other in the past and there is already a colorful history of on-field results that go back several seasons in different leagues and over many games.

And every rivalry game creates a new set of memories. Expect hundreds of fans to surround the field.

Earlier this year, on May 3, the Sígrs won, 35-22.

Last year, the teams split their two games. The first meeting, on April 8, was a game for the ages that the Alligators won, 19-13, when Jan Nestr, a mainstay of the team, picked up a blocked field goal and ran it back for a 72-yard touchdown with no time left on the clock, breaking the tie and giving the Alligators a symbolic win.

Since that game, however, the teams have gone in different directions. The Sígrs rebounded just enough to make the 2018 postseason after getting revenge with a 42-7 victory over the Alligators on June 17. The Alligators went 2-7 for the remainder of the season.

In 2019, neither team has been able to gain traction and neither has a chance to make the postseason.

Last Saturday, the Sígrs lost, 20-49, to the visiting Aquaponik Ostrava Steelers to fall to 4-5 in the Eastern Division. Tyrone Clark had touchdown runs of 1 and 6 yards, and Craig Coffman hit Igor Mašlanka for a 22-yard touchdown, but the Sígrs did not have enough to catch up.

Ostrava (7-2) is the likely division champion, but the second-place Vysočina Gladiators (6-3) could surprise them.

The Alligators (0-9) are last in the division, after losing to Vysočina, 25-28, on Sunday. The Alligators, who were led by quarterback Tomáš Fortelný, had the lead in the fourth quarter until the fourth Gladiators touchdown pass of the game provided the final score.

BASEBALL

Baseball Takes a Break for the Stars Game

Brno will be the site of a unique baseball experience on Friday when Peter Moylan, a right-handed pitcher with 12 years of Major League Baseball experience, will face the Czech national team. The exhibition game is at MBS and starts at 7 p.m.

The Czech extraliga will take a break for a couple weeks for the Stars Game and Prague Baseball Week (25-28 June). The Top6 standings have Eagles Praha (8-1) at the top with Arrows Ostrava (4-2) a notch below with some games to make up. Draci Brno (4-5), Kotlářka Praha (4- 5), Cardion Hroši Brno (4-4) and Tempo Praha (0-6) round out the list.

In the lower bracket, Technika is 2-4 after sweeping Skokani Olomouc in two games on Saturday.

Brno Cricket Finishes T20 Season With Big Win

The Brno Cricket Club got some redemption when they beat the Prague Cricket Club in the final match of the T20 season on Saturday.

Brno, the home team, went 69-1 with 12.3 overs. Prague went 65-10 through 15.1 overs.

The victory puts Brno (6-3) temporarily atop the Czech standings. However, Prague (6-2) has two matches in hand.

The two teams met on the opening weekend of the season. Prague won to confirm its league title of the previous year. Brno had finished second in 2018.

The Brno Cricket Club second team (4-2-1) tied the Bohemians Cricket Club (7-1-1) on Saturday morning. Both teams scored 131.

The T40 season, which features longer games, starts in mid-July. Brno opens the season at home on July 13 against Vinohrady Cricket Club. The match starts at 11:30 a.m.
