MEN’S FOOTBALL

Both Brno Teams Unbeaten in Fortuna: Narodni Liga

It is looking more and more that the game between FC Zbrojovka and SK Líšeň in mid-September will be an actual Battle for Brno.

In fact, it may be a battle for the supremacy in the Fortuna: Narodni Liga.

Both FC Zbrojovka, the traditional top team in the city, and SK Líšeň, the overachieving team that climbed up through the ranks, are unbeaten through four rounds of play in the second league.

Líšeň has won two games on the road and earned ties in both games that it has played in its sold-out stadium. They won their fourth-round game at FC Sellier & Benoit Vlasim, 1-2, on Sunday. They next play at home game against FC Slavoj Vyšehrad on Saturday.

Their eight points are second to Jihlava’s league-leading 10.

Zbrojovka has three ties and a win after Ústí nad Labem converted a penalty kick on Friday night in the final minutes for a 2-2 tie. Zbrojovka is now 1-3-0 for six points in four matches. On Saturday, ČT Sport will broadcast the Zbrojovka at Dukla Praha “brunch game” at 10:15 a.m.

The two Brno teams are scheduled to play in Kralovo Pole in the eighth round of the season. The game is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. It is will be the first game after an international break Note that game times often change.

The rivalry game will be interesting. It has no significant on-field history, but it will nevertheless be filled with subplots, as all cross-town rivalries are, including neighbor against neighbor and colleague against colleague. More than that, the teams have had a long history of working together while they were in different leagues. Zbrojovka had often sent its young and recovering players to Líšeň to get playing time. Last year’s leading scorer for Líšeň, Jakub Přichystal, was on loan from Zbrojovka.

That close relationship has continue this year. Marek Vintr, who was loaned by Zbrojovka to Líšeň less than a month ago, has scored in all three of the games he has played for Líšeň. His latest was on Sunday when he came on at halftime and scored the winner in the 88th minute.

In the opposite direction, Zbrojovka brought midfielder David Krška over from Líšeň and he proved to be an active player who was involved with the pace of the play, both offensively and defensively, throughout the game against Ústí nad Labem.

The Zbrojovka – Ústí nad Labem game started with two quick goals. Ústí got on the board in the fourth minute after some defensive confusion failed to clear a ball from the box, but, Antonin Rusek scored two minutes later.

Zbrojovka took the lead in the 81st minute when Simon Sumbera, who also helped with the first Zbrojovka goal, made a perfect pass from the wing to the foot of Lukáš Magera. It felt like the game would be a win worth three points.

But, five minutes later, Zbrojovka was penalized and Ústí nad Labem equalized.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
