MEN’S FOOTBALL

Líšeň Earns Another Point, Zbrojovka Beaten for First Time Since April

SK Líšeň is doing everything right as a new member of the Fortune:Narodni Liga, earning points in the standings every way that it can. FC Zbrojovka, the favorite to win the league, is also gathering points, but at a slower pace than would be expected.

Last Saturday, the two teams’ fates diverged even more. Líšeň earned a point with a scoreless tie against visiting FC Slavoj Vyšehrad to move to third place in the standings with a record of 2-3-0 and nine points. (Their 10 goals scored are more than the other two teams with nine points, and second most in the league.)

FC Zbrojovka Brno, on the other hand, is 1-3-1 for six points. It is in ninth place after losing to FK Dukla Praha, 2-1, during a brunch game that was broadcast live on Czech TV on Saturday morning. That ended a 13-game unbeaten streak.

FK Pardubice (3-2-0, 11 points) is atop the standings. SK Líšeň travels to second-place FC Vysočina Jihlava (3-1-1, 10 points) on Friday for a 6 p.m. game.

FC Zbrojovka Brno is at home against MFK Vítkovice on Friday at 7 p.m.

Zbrojovka allowed Dukla goals at 47 minutes, on a shot from the edge of the penalty box that curled away from Brno goalkeeper Jiří Floder, and nine minutes later, on a free-kick into the box that resulted in a header goal that somehow, between two defenders, went in for a two-goal lead.

Two minutes later, Zbrojovka scored when Šimon Šumbera put a corner kick directly into the center and found Jakub Šural all alone for a header.

Zbrojovka’s streak of earning points ended at 13 games. All together, with a 0-3 MOL Cup win at 1. HFK Olomouc last Wednesday included, FC Zbrojovka Brno was 8-5-0 since late April. (Zbrojovka was also 4-0-1 during the between-season preparation games, losing only at first-league SFC Opava against former Brno captain Pavel Zavadil.)

On Saturday, Aug. 31, Zbrojovka will travel to FK Fotbal Třinec for a brunch game at 10:15 a.m. and Líšeň will host FK Viktoria Žižkov at 5 p.m.

Then there will be a break for international play and two weeks of preparation for the first cross-town rivalry game between host FC Zbrojovka and SK Líšeň. The Battle for Brno is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. (Note that game times often change.)

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL

Lokomotiva Horní Heršpice Starts Season with Moravian Derby Win

The Lokomotiva Horní Heršpice women’s football team started their third season in the country’s top league with a road victory against 1. FC Slovácko in Uherské Hradiště on Sunday, 1-2.

After Slovácko captain Eliška Janíková converted a penalty kick to get the home team on the board in the 19th minute, Lokomotiva’s Desena Dianišková scored in 24th minute to even the score. Nikol Mazúchová converted the game-winner in the 52nd minute.

Four of the Slovácko players are on the extended roster for the Czech national team, including goalkeeper Barbora Růžičková, who made the National Team Squad for two games against Moldavia and Poland later this month.

The previous Moravian Derby was in April and had entrée into the Championship group of the league on the line. Slovácko won, 2-1, in front of a league-high crowd of 723 fans. Horni Herspice had to fight for the right to stay in the league in the lower bracket.

Prior to that, Lokomotiva had won twice. In the Czech Women’s Football Cup quarterfinals, Lokomotiva scored three second-half goals to win in Uherské Hradiště in late February. Lokomotiva won the previous league game in Horni Herspice, 1-0, in October 2018.

The first home game of the season for Lokomotiva Brno H.H. will be against FK Dukla Praha on Sept. 7 at 11 a.m.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, cricket, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to bruno@brnodaily.cz.
