Feeling overweight? Are you sluggish after sitting behind a desk all day? Watch too many videos? Play too many PC games? Eat too much junk food? Drink too much beer?

Everyone has personal shortfalls with which they must struggle. Sometimes it is hard to get the momentum started in order to right the ship.

Luckily, Brno has a lot of opportunities for physical movement and programs for general betterment. Every year for the past quarter century, the city has tried to provide momentum for people to improve their well-being and encourage people to actually get moving.

Brněnské dny pro zdraví — Brno Days of Health — will have dozens of activities and meetings and instructional gatherings from Sept. 20 to 29. The activities are designed for Czech-speaking residents, but there is contact information for each event and many will be accessible for non-Czech speakers.

The overall list of health-related events is large and detailed. There is something for everyone. The website is: https://www.brno.cz/brnenskednyprozdravi/ If you do not read Czech, use a translator program. The easiest is through Google Chrome: right click anywhere on the text and select “Translate to English”.

For example, if you have still never tried yoga, then this is your chance. There are many opportunities throughout the city, with multiple sessions and different themes pretty much every day.

If you are a new mother Sept. 20 alone has “Exercise for infants – Bobath concept” and “From breastfeeding to solid food”. Plus “fitMAMI” is for the new mothers who want to exercise with their baby carriages. Every day has similar activities.

Toddlers are a particular focus of the program. Drawing. Hiking. Floorball. Swimming. Theater. A relay race for toddlers in Lužánky Park. The Draci baseball team will have an event on Sept. 27. And, on Sept. 28, in the Old Town Hall courtyard, parents and their kids can try their hand in a fun competition with a wheel similar to that of the Brno legend.

Local swimmers will try to collectively complete 2,990 km for charity as part of We Swim from Europe to America on Sept. 27-29.

There are many cycling and hiking events events, including:

  • “Cycling Around Šobesu” is a bike trip through the Podyjí National Park on Sept. 21.
  • “Riding Through Brno”, which is in its sixth year, is a popular event for inline skating, bikes and scooters that will start on Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Auto Palace Brno on Řipská Street.
  • And the local travel agency Kuderna will sponsor “international hikes” through Brno on Sept. 28, with distances ranging from 6.5 km up to an option for 42 km.

As for running, on Sept. 21 Husova Street will be closed down for the 5- and 10-mile Night Run, which winds through Spilberk Castle and around the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul.

Basically, if you have a personal shortfall related to health, you can find motivation through Brno Days of Health. Have fun.
