Brno, Sep 22 (BD) – Ready for a week full of things to do? There is a lot going on in Brno to keep you entertained this week. A bunch of art exhibitions for art lovers. A wide range of knowledge events and competitions for intellectuals. And of course, for everyone who loves socialising, you can look forward to Roma Fest, underground concerts and an Experience Day with the City Police on Saturday. Below is our list of recommendations, so get a cup of hot tea and look for events that take your interest.

It has been almost a month since the summer holidays finished: do you already need to relax again? On Tuesday at 6pm, there will be a Meditation Course in English that you won’t want to miss. If your goal is to achieve true meditation, a state of mind where you can find deep peace while still being alert, then you should definitely attend the Sahaja Yoga Meditation course. The event is free of charge, although registration is required to attend on Tuesday and the following course. If you can’t make it this Tuesday, don’t worry because it will be held every Tuesday at 6pm for the rest of the year. You can find more information on the Facebook event page.

Lover of the fine arts? This week two exhibitions will open in Brno. The first starts on Tuesday with a vernissage at 6pm at Brno’s House of Arts and features the powerful and symbolic paintings of Theodor Pištěk, you can find more information here. The second exhibition, Better to Collect Butterflies? (“Raději sbírat motýly?“) presents the paintings collected by art connoisseur Richard Adams and his ties with Brno and the Czech modern art panorama. The exhibition opens on Thursday with a vernissage at 5pm at the Moravian Gallery. You can find more information on the Moravian Gallery website

The art just keeps coming this week as on Friday there is an exhibition of the finalists from the Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2019, focused on current environmental issues and public awareness of climate change. The award is well-known and prestigious among visual artists. A distinct feature of the exhibition is that the entire exhibition is powered by solar panels. Additionally, the exhibition will be set up with electrical wiring cables pulled through all the rooms. Sounds interesting? You can find more information here

Have you ever been curious about our Earth and wanted to access open data about the Earth’s atmosphere, climate change and land on the Copernicus platform? If this has never crossed your mind, then the Copernicus Hackathon Brno would be a perfect event for you to explore how business can be involved in such a concept. If you have some innovative ideas and want to present them at the hackathon, you are advised to register for this 48 hours competition, to get the chance to meet the leaders from the Czech startup community and win prizes worth EUR 6,000 plus a seat in the Copernicus Accelerator. This one-year coaching scheme is organised by the European Commission. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to leverage your future career.

If you live in Brno, you will have realised by now that everyone loves beer. So, if you love drinking as well you shouldn’t miss Oktoberfest 2019 at Zelný trh, which lasts from Wednesday 25 until Sunday 29. The famous Bavarian tradition has spread to Brno, and five of the best original breweries will be there to offer you a cold beer (although we all know Czech beer is better). You can find more information about Oktoberfest on the Facebook event page (in Czech).

You don’t need a lab coat, but bring your curiosity with you to get the most out of the Night of Scientists (“Noc vědců”) on Wednesday evening. All the major science hubs in the city will stay open for visitors after their usual closing times, and the program is full of events, although most of them are in Czech. You can find a full list of events and participating organizations, including Vida!, Brno University of Technology, Brno Technical museum and MUNI, on the Facebook event pages and on the official website of the event (in Czech).

Oh, and before we forget, Brno Planetarium is also participating and will be bringing out the giant inflatable moon we all loved in July, weather permitting. And for lovers of trash movies, the movie “Iron Sky” will be screened in English with Czech subtitles on the facade of the building, a film about Nazis establishing a base on the Moon and trying to conquer Earth from space. Can you really afford to miss it? Find more information (in Czech) on the Planetarium website.

On Saturday and Sunday, the first ever Roma Fest 2019 will be held, with artists from Czech Republic and Slovakia coming in Brno for an amazing experience. The event will take place in the newly opened club Radost, with a limited capacity of 1200 people, so hurry up and get your ticket if you’re interested in discovering a new culture. To book your ticket, and for more information, check the event website (in Czech).

Do you like a good movie night? Well get ready for an extraordinary treat because there is an awesome experience waiting for you. Brno Observatory and Planetarium, in collaboration with Future Gate Film Festival, will be projecting one of the best sci-fi horror movies ever, Alien, on “ALIEN NIGHT – 40 Years of Terror /Brno/ (ALIEN NIGHT – 40 Let Teroru /Brno/”) on Saturday, for the 40th anniversary of its first release. The movie will be in English with Czech subtitles. Tickets are on sale for CZK 350. For more details check the Facebook event page (in Czech).

Are you a vintage vehicle enthusiast? On Saturday there is an amazing event just for you. At Brno–Soběšice 2019, many amazing cars and motorcycles from the 1920s to 1950s will be exhibited, so that’s definitely an event you shouldn’t miss. Tickets will be on sale from Saturday 28, you can find more information on the Facebook event page (in Czech).

On Saturday there is another exciting festival, the all-day family-friendly Experience Day (not only) with the City Police (“Zážitkový Den (nejen) s městskou policií”), which will attract not only children but also young people and adults with all kinds of demonstrations in water and on land. This is also an event to recall your childhood, where you might come across various familiar and nostalgic figures from the past. As the event is free of charge, you are highly recommended to come along to this fun day with your friends and family. Find more information about this event here (in Czech).
