Brno, Sep 26 (BD) – The Cemetery Administration of the City of Brno has teamed up with the creators of the Encyclopaedia of the History of Brno to create an interactive historical exhibition in Brno’s Central Cemetery, using smart technology. QR codes are being installed on the 171 graves that are designated “honored graves” – the burial places of figures of historical importance – and visitors to the graves will be able to scan each code to access more information about the life of the deceased.

First Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-CSL) explained how the scheme will work: “Visitors can easily find the graves through a map application, read the code with a smart device and then open a page with a biography on the Encyclopedia of the History of Brno. We’ll see how the idea takes off. We would like to extend it to other personalities whose graves have not been designated as ‘honored’.”

The Central Cemetery in Brno was established in 1883 and is the largest in the Czech Republic. It has approximately 80,000 graves, housing the remains of about 400,000 people. Graves considered ‘honored’ include Bohuslav Fuchs, Leoš Janáček, Karel Absolon, Gregor Johann Mendel, Jan Skácel and Rudolf Těsnohlídek. QR codes are also installed on honored graves located in the other ten cemeteries in Brno.

The new QR codes will be launched on 3 October 2019 at 3pm in the Central Cemetery, in a ceremony which will also include a guided tour.
