Brno, Oct 1 (BD) – Last year the 33-metre wheel on Moravske namesti was one of the highlights of Brno’s Christmas celebrations. Due to last year’s success, this year it will be in operation for visitors from October 7th, depending on favourable weather. The wheel is tied to two anniversaries that Brno-střed City District is keen to celebrate: the 100th anniversary of the founding of Greater Brno, and the 30th anniversary of the Brno City Conservation Area.

Rides on the wheel will cost CZK 100, with children up to one metre tall travelling for free. Each ticket will include a map of the panorama, highlighting the important landmarks visible from the cabins. A photo exhibition in the square will document the transformation of the urban conservation area over the last 100 years.

Vojtěch Mencl (ODS), Mayor of Brno-střed, welcomed the early opening of the wheel, in conjunction with the photo exhibition: “I am very happy that, in cooperation with the National Institute for the Preservation of Historical Monuments and the Department for the Preservation of Historical Monuments of the City of Brno, we have managed to open this sightseeing opportunity to the public, along with historical information, from the beginning of October. We will use the revenues from the wheel to fund our cultural events and facilities.”

The wheel will be in operation until November 10th, when it will close to allow the rest of the Christmas market to be set up, reopening again on November 22nd. The wheel will close again on December 23rd, hopefully to return next year!
