Do you want Joseph? You can vote at www.chcesjosefa.cz. A statue of Emperor Joseph II may be erected in the recently reconstructed Dominikánské náměstí. A life-size model of the statue can currently be seen in the square, and citizens can take part in an online vote until August 15 to decide whether it will become permanent. Brno, Jul 16 (BD) – A statue commemorating Emperor Joseph II. could be returning to the center of Brno after a hundred years, right in front of the town hall in Dominikánské náměstí. But opinions differ over whether to move Joseph, the bronze statue currently located on the premises of the Černovice psychiatric hospital, or to install a brand new piece of artwork. A life-size dummy of the sculpture can be seen in the square until the end of the first week of August, and citizens can express their opinion in an online poll.

Joseph II was Holy Roman Emperor from 1765, and ruler of the Habsburg lands (the Austro-Hungarian Empire) from 1780 until his death in 1790. Joseph II, sometimes called “the enlightened despot,” is known for his modernization efforts; he sought to introduce administrative, legal, economic, and ecclesiastical reforms, though with only partial success.
