Brno, Jul 16 (BD) – A statue commemorating Emperor Joseph II. could be returning to the center of Brno after a hundred years, right in front of the town hall in Dominikánské náměstí. But opinions differ over whether to move Joseph, the bronze statue currently located on the premises of the Černovice psychiatric hospital, or to install a brand new piece of artwork. A life-size dummy of the sculpture can be seen in the square until the end of the first week of August, and citizens can express their opinion in an online poll.
Joseph II was Holy Roman Emperor from 1765, and ruler of the Habsburg lands (the Austro-Hungarian Empire) from 1780 until his death in 1790. Joseph II, sometimes called “the enlightened despot,” is known for his modernization efforts; he sought to introduce administrative, legal, economic, and ecclesiastical reforms, though with only partial success.
