Brno, June 1 (BD) – If you’re going to actively use your bike and leave it on the streets, you will need a protection – the only line of defense against bike thieves is a bike lock. But not even that can secure your bike in 100% cases.

The bike thieves are getting more active as people start using cycling paths in the summer and leave their property unattended while taking a break for refreshments. Unfortunately, the thieves don’t stop outside.

Yet unknown offender broke into a residential building in Modřice this week probably using the unsecured front door. He entered building’s shared bike room, removed locks from two vehicles, and stole them. The cost of those two sport bikes goes up to 50 000 CZK. Another bicycle of estimated value of 10 000 CZK disappeared from the hall of a residential house in Ivančice. In Ivančice, the thief used violence to break the house door informs South Moravian Police.

In the industrial zone in Pohořelice, other thieves stole a bicycle of 22-year-old owner parked on the street. They didn’t mind the lock. The bike’s cable lock was cut and nearly ten-thousand bike disappeared into the night.

Bicycle theft is a problem in every bigger city, so how can we go about protecting our bikes from the thieves? Check a few strategies of protecting your bike.

1. ‘Uglification’

This strategy keeps the performance and riding quality of a bicycle while disguising in an “old” and “battered” coat. You can use a spray or duct tape to achieve the rusty and used look.

2. Alarm System

Cars and houses ward off thieves with alarm systems, so why could’t your bike have one? For example, you could use an alarmed, motion sensor padlock.

3. Bigger or Industrial Chain:

In addition to the above methods, get your hands on heavy-duty and get your bike a chain that cannot be cut with everyday equipment.
