Brno, Sep 6 (BD) – This Monday was the first day when drivers entering the historic center of Brno had to comply with new parking rules. Some streets in the center were unusually empty on Monday morning as many drivers were confused about the new system, and decided not to enter the town centre at all to avoid any wrongdoing.
The new residential parking system came into force from September 1, but the rules were not enforced for the first weekend, to allow drivers some extra time to get used to the new parking system. The first checks were made on the first working and school day of September.
The special car drives up and down the streets according to a random key. Its camera system checks and compares licence plates with the registry of cars with valid residential parking permits. The city police and council have agreed that the monitoring system will operate in test mode (mainly to assess the situation) in the first weeks, as reported on the City’s website on Monday. The money collected from the new city center parking system will go into the newly created mobility fund, and will subsequently be reinvested in new car parks, pedestrian and bicycle transport arrangements, and temporary parking facilities at primary and nursery schools.
