The city centre can get sweltering hot during the summer, as Brno’s residents witnessed this summer. Shade is much needed in the center on hot days. The City Council have acknowledged this and earlier this week approved a move to grow trees in Dominikánské Námesti. Photo: Dominikánské Náměstí today. // Credit: @BrnoDaily.

Brno, Sep 24 (BD) – The proposed statue of Joseph II will most likely not be placed in Dominikánské Náměstí, one of the main squares in the center of Brno. (Read more in our previous article “City Residents Say “No” to Statue of Joseph II on Dominikánské Náměstí”.) The City Council decided on the final design of the square this week, which will see four large plane trees surround a fountain in the middle. “We are not building another square without trees. In the lower part, the grids for the trees are already visible, and the other four will be soon placed in the central part,” said Mayor Petr Vokřál.

A new tree-lined ‘alley’ will be planted in the lower part of the square (where Veselá Street would continue). The proposal is the result of a long and complex discussion among politicians, architects, and representatives from the monument preservation department.

The trees will be planted around mid-November.
