WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Žabiny Take All Three EWHL Games, KP Brno Stays Undefeated

Žabiny Brno won all three of the European Women’s Basketball League games that it hosted over the weekend and KP Brno won two games in the ZBL last week to stay undefeated and atop the Czech league standings.

Žabiny Brno hosted Group B play in the EWBL and the home team played well in each game, beating Horizont Belarus, 67-59, on Friday; Kibirkstis Vilnius, 79-67, on Saturday; and Piesťanské Čajky, 73-39, on Sunday.

“We met with three different game styles in a short sequence and we were able to prepare for them,” said Žabiny head coach Viktor Pruša. “It was definitely a great experience for the whole team and the three wins are a great advantage for us in the next part of the league.”

Meanwhile, KP Brno is undefeated in four games in the ZBL. The defending league champions help on to beat BLK Slavia Praha, 74-73, on Wednesday. Then they travelled across town to play Teamstore Brno on Friday, winning 56-101.

KP Brno and Žabiny Brno will meet in ZBL play on Dec. 8 and on March 2.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Three straight league wins put egoé Brno in Third

Through four games of the Kooperativa NBL, egoé Brno has established itself as a team to beat with three wins. The latest was Sunday when they beat visiting BK Armex Děčín, 77-68.

egoé Brno, which lost only at Svitavy in the first game of the season, added the league win to two from the previous week. If you count a victory in the Alpe Adria Cup, the team has a four-game winning streak.

Brno plays next at USK Praha on Saturday. The next home game is against BK JIP Pardubice on Oct. 27 at 7 p.m.

egoé Brno started the week with a nice win in the Alpe Adria Cup on Wednesday. BK Dukes Klosterneuburg were late in arriving to the venue, but they got out to a quick start. It took a run of seven points by Viktor Vašát and a big Radek Farský 3-pointer to get Brno back into the game in the fourth quarter. Brno outscored Kosterneuburg 17-4 in a four-minute stretch. Then, Brno held on for the win, 77-76.

The Brno Sports Report is published every Wednesday. All dates and times are subject to change. Most of the stories are about the traditional “English-speaking” team sports — football, hockey, baseball, basketball, American football, rugby, etc. — but it is also about the interesting local spectator and participation sports — tennis, badminton, running, horse racing, swimming, rock climbing, biking, etc. If you have any suggestions for what should be included, please comment below or send an email to brnosports@gmail.com.
