Brno, Mar 28 (BD) – In 1869, Brno became the first city in the Czech Republic with public tram transport, when the first horse-drawn tram began operation. This year marks 150 years since the creation of Brno Transport Company (DPMB), and as part of the celebrations to mark the occasion, Brno Technical Museum will be restoring a selection of nine historic tram carriages to run on the tramlines of Brno, so that residents can see for themselves how our ancestors got around town.
The selected trams will span the period from 1876 to 1972, and will include the well-known Caroline locomotive, the 1876 trolley carriage, the 1899 two-axle tram carriage, and the 1913 motor carriage. All historical trams brought back into operation must comply with the requirements of the Railways Act and related regulations. According to Petr Kratochvíl (ODS), council member for transport: “This includes carrying out revisions, technical inspections and brake tests. Moreover, any defects detected need to be removed and the trams adapted to meet the requirements for operation on the current tramway.”
The restorations will be supported by a CZK 2.3 million subsidy from the City of Brno. Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS) commented: “The 150th anniversary of public transport in Brno is a very important event. We are glad that we can support the museum’s efforts and that people will be able to transport themselves into Brno’s past through these historic carriages. I believe that it will be a nice experience for all of us.”
Brno residents and visitors will be able to see these trams, and other events marking the occasion, between May 18 and August 31.
