Brno, Oct 4 (BD) – In February 2017, Brno realized that there’s a difficulty in communication between the big number of newcomers and Czech-speaking city offices.
Public institutions couldn’t work effectively because of the lack of the intercultural awareness and language skills.
On Tuesday, October 3, Brno city councilors approved more than a five-million-crown grant for a new inter-cultural project.
A team of so-called intercultural employees will be created and they will work together with Czech office workers.
This project will help people, who are living in Brno or plan to do so, with free consultations about the legal documents, legal work, explain the taxation system, healthcare system and more.
“They will communicate with foreigners and public institutions and translate official materials,” the adviser for foreigners from the social inclusion department Lenka Šafránková Pavlíčková said.

The languages for the team have been chosen according to the ethnic minorities most commonly encountered by officials.
Brno will be officially the first city with its own translators present in public institutions.
