From 9 am on November 11 until 5 pm November 12, lovers of this beautiful flower will able to peek into orchid’s heaven at Botanical Garden and Arboretum of Mendel University (map) here in Brno!

Ever heard about the myths around the orchid?
In Ancient Greek Mythology, Orchis was the son of a satyr-demonic mythical being living in the mountains and the forests and a nymph – female of divine origin, young in age, living in the mountains and accompanying Goddess Artemis.
After consuming a lot wine at one Dionysian feast (festival dedicated to God Dionysus), Orchis tried to rape one of Dionysus’ priest. For his sacrilege he was punished to be killed by wild beasts.
His father kept praying for a long time the Gods to bring his son back to life and they decided to bring him back turning him into a flower, the orchid.
The name of the flower is its original name from ancient times.
Theophrastus (c. 371 – c. 287 BC), the “Father of Botany”, found similarities of the double-walled roots of some species of orchids with the male genital organs and gave this name to the plant family. “ Όrkhis ” in Greek literally means “testicles”.
Both in antiquity and in modern times, the roots of orchids were considered to have unique qualities.
The roots of “Orchis papilionacea” were believed to determine the child’s gender: if the father ate them the child would be a boy, if the mother ate them then it would be a girl.
