Veronica Foundation [Nadace Veronica] is organising a charity fashion show with a theme of “Upcycling challenge”. Fashion designers participating in the challenge will use fabric waste and fabric purchased in charity shops to create and showcase their designs on the runway.
Upcycling is often described as the process of converting old or discarded materials into new materials or useful items. The designers will present designs specifically conceived for Veronica Charity Auction, but also designs from their previous collections. The event includes presentations of 38 designs.
“The Upcycling challenge is closely linked to our charity shops. There are a lot of the clothes donated that couldn’t have been used for sale due to minor imperfections or too much wear (…). Seeing all these clothes that we send every week for recycling, I came up with an idea to challenge local designers to upcycle at least some of it,” Veronica Foundation director Helena Tovarkova explained.
In total six fashion designers from Brno, David Severa, Hana Kubešová, Marie Mukařovská Dress, Natálie Vencovská, Andrea Lojkaskova/Theó and Natálie Vencovská have accepted the challenge.
Purchase one of the designs. After the show, you can walk home with one of the 18 designs given for auction. Those who want to participate in the auction will receive their auction number at the entrance. These contributions will finance projects in Moravian countryside.
“From the beginning, it was also clear that the designs will be put up for sale and the money raised will be given back to the nature by providing small grants for local people for environmental projects of their choice,” Tovarkova said.
Upcycling is more than transforming a piece of fabric into a new one. It is also about raising awareness and encouraging people to create more sustainable habits.
“Upcycling is about knowing the construction of the garments and reworking the old into the new with great fashion sense. Showing appealing ways how to upcycle the garments can change people´s mind in favour of slow and sustainable fashion,” Helena Tovarkova clarified.
The money collected will be used to support local causes, NGOs and groups of people engaged in environmental projects in South Moravia.
“Our focus has always been to support local people in changing their local environment for better. These mentioned projects work on planting trees, renewing old orchards, putting up bird houses, working together with local farmers to pick unwanted vegetables and giving them to people in need and reducing food waste, community gardens and so on,” Tovarkova added.
Veronica Foundation is the largest non-profit organization of South Moravia dedicated to protecting nature, landscape and environment. This NGO project started in 1992.
