Brno, Nov 29 (BD) – Winter running series continues; Škoda leads Zbrojovka to another win; Žabiny Brno X KP Brno in women’s hoops; mmcité+ Brno plays Thursday and Saturday; Kometa struggles to regain form; and the Brno sports schedule.
Some days just end up full of stuff to do. This Saturday is just such a day. If you are a fan of Brno sports, then it is simply overflowing. It will be tough to do it all, but you can try, or just pick out the interesting events.
RUNNING
10:30 / 11:15 a.m. — Mikulášský běh Okrouhlá
The Brno Running Cup — Brněnský běžecký pohár — continues with the St. Mikulaus run.
It is the second of 10 events in the series that runs through the winter until April 2018.
The race is in Okrouhlá, which is quite a bit north of the city, winds through forests and, many years, over snow-covered fields.
The 5km run starts at 10:30 a.m. and the 10km race starts at 11:15 a.m.
It costs 50kc with the series registration card; 60kc without the card.

MEN’S FOOTBALL
3 p.m. — Zbrojovka Hosts Zlin
Riding a modest two-game winning streak, Zbrojovka Brno will try to finish the first half of the HET Liga season in the middle of the standings when they host Moravian rival Zlin.
Michal Škoda has sparked the recent form. He came off the bench to score the winning goal against Teplice on Nov. 18 and he scored both goals in the 2-0 victory at Jihlava on Friday.
Brno has had a rough season so far and they were dead last only two rounds ago. Now, they are 4-2-9 with 14 points through 15 games. In their past four games, they have given up on only one goal, scored three and accumulated seven points in the standings.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
4:30 p.m. — Žabiny Brno X KP Brno
The two top women’s basketball teams in Brno will meet for the first time this year. Their games are always big. Expect emotion on the court and a loud crowd in the stands.
Both Žabiny Brno and KP Brno have seven wins in the ZBL, although KP Brno has a game in hand. KP Brno had won seven league games in a row before they lost at home to DSK Basketball Nymburk, 74-80, on Saturday. Žabiny Brno is coming off of a home victory over Loko Trutnov, 62-55, on Sunday.
Both teams have also been getting playing time against top teams in Europe as part of international tournaments. Prior to the rivalry game, both teams play nonleague games tonight: KP Brno host Venezia at 6 p.m. in the final EuroCup game and Žabiny Brno hosts Olimpia CSU Brasov at 6 p.m. in a Central Europe Women’s League game.
Technic Brno played the top team in the ZBL on Saturday and it did not go well. ZVVZ USK Praha stayed undefeated with a dominating, 114-42, victory.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
7 p.m. — mmcité+ Brno hosts Olomoucko
mmcité+ Brno (3-6 this season) has two games this week, starting with an away game at BK JIP Pardubice (5-3) on Thursday.
Olomoucko (4-5) is in ninth place in the 12-team Kooperativa NBL, on place above Brno. Expect an excited crowd when the Moravian teams meet.
Also on Saturday is a non-sport activity: the re-enactment of the Battle of Austerlitz starts at 2 p.m. in the fields near Tvarozna east of Brno. It will, however, be over well before the mmcité+ Brno basketball game.
HOCKEY
Kometa Breaks Five-Game Losing Streak
Kometa Brno does not play on Saturday, but they continue their packed schedule with a lot of upcoming big games. They start at home against Oceláři Třinec at 6 p.m. tonight, then they travel for games at Mountfield HK at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and at Zlín at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Then Kometa really hits the road to play the first part of their Hockey Champions League quarterfinal home-and-home series in Finland against JYP Jyväskylä. That games starts at 6 p.m. The following week, on Dec. 12, Kometa will host JYP Jyväskylä with a 5:30 p.m. start.
On Sunday, Kometa snapped a six-game losing streak when they beat Litvínov, 6-2, at home. Six different players scored goals, spreading the offense around. Earlier in the week, had lost at Olomouc, 3-2, in extra time.
The bad news is that Kometa is going through (making coming out of) a rough spot in the season. The encouraging news is that a similar slump happened last year, and Kometa won the league title anyway.
