One hundred years ago, the people of central Europe become Czechoslovakia. Ninety years ago, Czechoslovakia celebrated its 10-year birthday with the opening of the Brno Exhibition Grounds. This spring, all of it will be celebrated with Festival Re:publika 1918-2018.

Festival Re:publika will bring historical moments, historical figures, culture, sport, art, performance and every facet of one-hundred years of statehood together for one exhibition from May 26 to June 17.

Photo credit: Festival Re:publikaBrno will be the stage for the celebration because 90 years ago the decade-of-statehood celebration was commemorated at the newly opened Exhibition Grounds. President Tomas Masaryk, among many others, came to Brno to join in the celebration.
Specifically, the Re:publika exhibitions will look back on a century of life in the center of Europe, from the establishment of Czechoslovakia on Oct. 28, 1918; to the split between the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic on Jan. 1, 1993; and to membership in the European Union on May 1, 2004.
Works of art and culture will be included, so will personal stories.
There will also be concerts and theatre performances. Dance, sport, design and architecture will bring additional points of view for the past 100 years.
The festival is led by the City of Brno and supported by the government of the Czech Republic, local governments, local universities and local religious organizations. It will be promoted through Czech embassies and Czech organizations around the world.
Partner cities and neighboring counties will also be included in the celebration.
