Brno, Feb 14 (BD) – Czech Railways (CD) wants to start building a new depot in Brno-Maloměřice this year. The new station will facilitate the handling of long trains RegioPanter and InterPanter.
RegioPanter and InterPanter started operating in the South-Moravian Region in 2014. The current facility was designed and built more than 50 years ago for repairs and maintenance of steam locomotives. Later, it served as a facility for the maintenance of electric and motor locomotives. However, it’s capacity is insufficient for modern trains.
Historical steam locomotives and electric units of 560 series are still being repaired here, Czech architectonic service Archiweb writes.
The estimated budget for the construction of the new depot is CZK 25 million; contractors must submit their bids by the end of this February, reported Czech local daily Brnenska drbna on Feb. 8.
The new hall is expected to be about 150 meters long with two tracks and equipped with modern technology.
CD decided on the construction of a completely new depot on the basis of an expert study that deemed the enlargement of current facilities unfeasible, Czech transport website Z dopravy reports.
The South-Moravian Region will buy its own trains (the competition is in progress), and CD will offer its repair capacities, according to Z dopravy.
