The Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU) founded in 1947, is one of two academies of music and the dramatic arts in the Czech Republic. It is named after Leoš Janáček, one of the most distinguished composers in modern European music, who was its spiritual father.

Currently, more than 500 students study at JAMU.

The Faculty of Music offers degree programs in composition, orchestral conducting, choral conducting, Church music, music management, opera direction, voice, and playing on the following instruments: harpsichord, piano, bassoon, flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, trombone, trumpet, organ, violin, bass, viola, cello, percussion instruments.

The Faculty of Theatre offers a Bachelor’s degree program with the following specializations: directing, theatre dramaturgy, radio and TV script editing and script writing, stage design, drama education for the deaf, drama education, theatre management, and stage technology.

The Theatre Faculty is the only institution in Europe that provides a degree course in drama education for the deaf.
