A year ago, in the center of Brno a group of enthusiasts opened a museum dedicated to the Cold War. The museum is located right under the Spilberk castle in the 10-Z bunker built by the Nazis and later used from the communist regime during the Cold War as shelter for their key figures.
Historian Pavel Paleček, the founder of the bunker museum, stated that they wanted to give the bunker a new cultural purpose and make it accessible again to the public after 28 years.
Trille’s parents, Danish actor and director Christian Birkedal and his partner were among the first visitors in the bunker who had the unique opportunity to stay inside overnight last year.
The lucky visitors had the chance not only to stay in the bunkers at night, but also to have a retro breakfast and walk through the Nazist and Stalinist Brno bunker exhibition.
“We came to Brno after six years while we were trying to have a baby and when we found out that 10-Z Bunker Brno was offering an experience stay, we knew that this strange place was just made for us,” said the father Christian Birkendal.
In the beginning, Pavel Paleček refused to let the couple to stay in the dark, moist and cold bunker. “It’s a good thing they didn’t listen to us.” “The bunker was built aiming to protect human lives during the war period, it is fortunate that a new life started there; that’s why three-month-old Trillka will have free admission here for life,” added the historian.
The rooms in the 10-Z bunker are available for booking online at Booking.com.
The exhibition inside 10-Z offers a walk through roughly 500 meters of tunnels, which visitors can explore at their own pace. At the entrance, they will receive a printed guide of the labyrinth and brief history of 10-Z in English, in which they will learn the stories of people affiliated with the fallout shelter.
Museum is open daily 11:30AM-6:50 PM except Mondays. Find the official website of the museum here.
