Do you want to help others? In that case, don’t throw away that old squeaky wardrobe or creaky chair! You can still donate it. Doing so kills two birds with one stone – you help families in need as well as your environment. Brno is the first among Czech cities to adopt the idea of re-use from Belgium and Austria, Brno.cz reports.
Over fifty families have so far made use of old furniture donated by citizens of Brno, the portal Brno Daily informs. The furniture is collected in four trash and recycling centers across Brno. The Social Welfare Department offers donated furniture to social housing facilities, socially disadvantaged families and other citizens, waste collection services Sako.cz notify.
The project RE-USE has been in operation since April 2016 and has three stages. According to Brněnskádrbna.cz, Brno citizens have managed to hand over 740 household items. 584 of them have found their new home. During one year of RE-USE, Brno disposed less waste – by 16.5 tons!
Willingness to help saves money
In Brno, you can do a good deed by not throwing “trash” away. On streets of Veveří, Hapalova, Okružní and Jana Svobody, there are specially designated places for all metal, plastic, wood or even patio furniture, official Brno web Brno.cz reports.
Deputy Mayor Martin Ander said in an official statement that “this project prevents waste and saves the city budget money”, however, it would not work without citizens’ support. The development of this helpful idea depends on the cooperation of people willing to help and the municipal environmental and social departments.
Thanks to the good-hearted people, unused or old chairs, tables, and beds will brighten up somebody’s room again. Less waste disposal ensures better environment and fewer “waste money” from city budget.
If you would like to donate your furniture but you need to have it picked up, send a question to Mgr. Květoslava Houzarová, +420 542 174 574, houzarova.kvetoslava@brno.cz.
RE-USE in three ways
Besides RE-Nab which deals with old furniture, there are two other projects in Brno that handle your old, but still useable items. RE-Nab reuses all old furniture except for upholstered furniture (for hygienic reasons).
CD, DVD players, toys, books, frames, paintings and other things are sold for a token fee by Sako.cz. The acquired money provides Brno with beds of flowers which are used to embellish the city.
Retro-Use collects all items made before 1989 for future cultural, artistic or personal use. Your retro stuff can be handed over in Street Husova, Bunker 10-Z, in front of Hotel International.
