Brno, Mar 22 (BD) – In 2017, 6,258 children were born at Brno University Hospital’s Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic. Compared to 2016, this is an increase of 103 newborns, the highest birth rate in the last 6 years, the hospital’s spokesman Mgr. Pavel Žára, M.A reported in an official press release this Wednesday.
The Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics of FN Brno is the largest obstetric department in the Czech Republic. Every year, almost 50% of newborns in the South Moravian Region are born here.

The population of the Czech Republic has been growing for a long time. Since 2003, population growth has been interrupted only once, in 2013.
In 2016, the population of the Czech Republic grew due to a positive trend in birthrate (the number of live births was approximately 4,900 more than the number of deaths) and foreign migration (a net gain of about 20,100 migrants), the Czech Statistical Office’s (CSO) data (31/12/2016) show.
The population of the Czech Republic thus increased by a total of approximately 25,000 and by the end of 2016, according to the CSO, totalled 10.5788 million.
According to the CSO preliminary statistical balance for the months of January to September of 2017, the population of the Czech Republic increased by about 18,700 to 10.5975 million (as of September 30, 2017).
Foreign migration of some 16,400 people was the main source of the population increase in the first three quarters of 2017. A further increase of about 2,300 was attributed to live births outnumbering deaths.
