Moravia has a long tradition of producing a wide variety of excellent wines and hosting fantastic wine festivals. Photo: Pexels
Brno, May 7 (BD) – Dotted with thousands of wine cellars, South Moravia offers many opportunities for wine drinkers throughout the year, but Spring and Autumn are when the festivals, big and small, take place.
Amazing atmosphere
While the festivals range in size (anything from 200 wines to a lot more), location (in a tiny village, a town hall, a city, in a chateau or its’ extensive gardens), price and style they all excel at providing a wide selection of locally produced wines in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Unlike some wine festivals which I have been to in other countries, Moravian wine festivals have a distinct lack of the snobbery and pretentious feeling often associated with wine-tasting events.
At the beginning of the season, you may find yourself being a judge and giving a rating to each wine you taste which will eventually contribute to the overall rating given to a wine. At other festivals, the wine has already been judged and the highest rated wines go fast – so get there early. Don’t worry if you arrive a bit later as the huge selection available means you will definitely find at least one wine to suit your palate.
Brno Daily visited the wine festival in the beautiful town of Horní Věstonice. Watch the video! Find more about upcoming wine festivals on this website https://www.wineofczechrepublic.cz/.
Tips
Food is usually available to buy but it is also very common, and acceptable, to see people turning up with their own boxes of cheese and bread. Likewise, many people choose to buy a branded glass at the event, always nice for your glass collection, whereas others take along their own glass.
Ordering is easy, regardless of your level of Czech. Organisers provide a booklet with the list of wines which are all numbered so, even if you can’t manage the numbers in Czech, you simply need to find the appropriate section and point to the bottle or booklet. Additionally, I have found it very common that many of the servers will speak some English or that a friendly local will be more than willing to help you, particularly as the day progresses.
Here at Brno Daily, we are very keen on wine festivals for all the reasons mentioned above and plan to keep you updated both on upcoming festivals and report from ones which we attend so keep your eyes on us for more information.
