Brno, Oct 26 (BD) –Since September there is a new place in Brno where you can start learning or improve your Czech – Czech Courses Brno on Kounicova 35. Manager Karolína Zlámalová introduces the school:
Karolína, can you tell us something about Czech Courses Brno?
Czech Courses Brno was opened in September on Kounicova 35 in Brno City centre. We offer all-level Czech language courses for foreigners. Czech Courses is originally a Prague language school founded in 2011 and has been in business successfully ever since.
Why did you decide to open a new branch in Brno?
After lots of discussions, research and visits to Brno we confirmed what we already thought – Brno is just as international as Prague and there are plenty of people here who might like or need to learn Czech. I was living in Prague and working in Czech Courses Prague, but I am originally from Moravia and had lived in Brno before. So, I was very excited when we first discussed the possibility of opening a branch in Brno. It is amazing that I can bring the concept of school I like so much to the city where I feel at home.
What do you think is specific about your language school?
We try to be flexible and accommodate the classes to the needs of our students. We offer a free trial class – students can come and see how we teach and discuss any questions they may have in person over a cup of tea or coffee with no obligation before they decide to enrol in a course. Also, if they miss a class, they can make up for it. For free.
What kind of courses do you offer?
We offer several types of group courses – weekly and bi-weekly evening courses, Friday afternoon courses and weekly and intensive morning courses. All our group classes are small, the maximum number of students is eight. Apart from that, we also offer individual classes, Skype lessons and in-company courses.
What is most important for you as a teacher when teaching Czech?
We are aware that Czech is a very difficult language to learn and that especially the grammar and pronunciation can be challenging, so we all are doing our best to make classes fun and engaging. Of course, we want them to be effective and our students to make fast progress, but we believe that learning is always much easier when you enjoy it. We incorporate lots of games, different types of activities, roleplays and dialogues to keep the classes interesting.
That sounds more like lessons for children than for adults.
I used to teach a group which started almost every class by asking “Will there be a game today?”. From my experience, everybody likes to play, and most people also like to compete. Team games are usually a great way for students to get to know each other better.

Do you have any future plans for the school?
Yes, many. We´d like become a school of the first choice when it comes to learning Czech in Brno and work hard on accommodating all the inspiration that comes from people who get in contact with us. We are hoping for dedicated courses for different student and professional groups – medicine, technical -and for advanced individuals working on passing their citizenship language test successfully.
We have also been recognized in several German states as a paid study leave provider for German employees who want to learn Czech in Prague and we’d like to bring this concept to Brno, too.
