There is something that can beat the comfort of the classic cinema chair with its soft seats. There are unconventional venues that can turn movie screenings into a unique experience. We’re referring to alternative and open air movie theaters and the truth is, you can find many of them in Brno.
We’ve recently discovered that many of you are interested in summer cinemas. So, we’ve decided to feature a few more interesting screening venues that are nothing close to the mainstream cinemas.
The slick experience
Letní kino Brno na Dvoře Městského divadla Brno at Lidická 12 is an open air cinema with an attractive screening program. Watch the movies in their original language or with English subtitles (for the ones dubbed in Czech). The uncommon venue – the yard of the City Theater Brno – has to offer more than a good movie experience. The restaurant is open at the time of screenings and serves grilled specialties – burgers, grilled cheese,…; there is something for everyone on their menu for quite fair prices from CZK 99 to 172 CZK.
25 places for booking in advance are available until 16:00 of the day of the movie screening there. This ‘letní kino’ has up to 300 additional seats to be occupied without any booking in advance.

Independent scene
This year, there are thematic film screenings referring to selected chapters from the book Kmeny90 [‘Tribes of 90s’ about 90s culture in the Czech Republic] in the yard of Místodržitelský palác at Moravske náměstí 1A. You can look forward to high-quality movies not only from the European continent, but also from the world cinema.
Tickets for the summer cinema can be purchased in advance at the box office or at the place half an hour before every screening. Without reservation.

At Pekařská 76, at the unique space of The Distillery you can watch a great selection of films in the small theater while enjoying a quirky cocktail from the outdoor bar. We fell in love with this hidden city spot right away. Films are screened everyday, most of them with English subtitles, even Czech films; so this is your big chance to explore the Czech cinema, too.

In the course of the whole year, you can catch unique movie screenings in the most unexpected places in the city. Fléda club at Štefánikova 24 and Industra Exhibiton Space at Masná 9 occasionally host movie screenings. Don’t expect Hollywood blockbusters and get ready for unconventional films.
Summer chill
Do you live in Židenice district? You’ve probably seen posters of Židenické letní kino na Dělňáku. Thursdays evenings in summer belong to an open air movie theater at ‘House of Culture na Dělňáku’ at Jamborova 65.
This year, Dělňák has prepared a mix of Czech and foreign films from recent years plus a few hottest new cinema entries. The screening takes place in the courtyard of Dělňák (entrance is through the garden restaurant).

Retro Brno
Fancy a cup of coffee when watching a movie? Kinokavárna at Náměstí SNP 33 is a unique place for all coffee and film lovers combining cinema and a good meal and chat with friends in one place. Back in the day, Kinokavárna was one of the most popular places in Brno. Their ‘uzený jazyk’ [pork tongue] was a sought-after delicacy. The guests were making their orders using red lamps placed on each table – they simply turned the light on and the waiter instantly appeared at their table.
The screenings take place twice a week. The cinema is closed in summer months. Find more information here.
