Brno, Mar 15 (BD) – By collecting the needles in the streets, the Municipal police prevent infections and injuries. The planned project responds to the growing number of discarded syringes on the streets.
In the past year, police patrols have found and safely disposed of 2,557 used syringes, exactly two hundred more than in 2016, Brno Municipal Police statistics showed.
Police remove needles from public areas as a part of their usual patrols. At the beginning of spring and at the end of autumn, Police organize special cleaning events.
This year, the police are going to step up their efforts and clean the dangerous needles from the streets of Brno in both March and April. “The officers will collect the needles on March 15, before the Easter holidays and before the nationwide event “Let’s Clean the Czech Republic”, and then on April 17,” Brno Municipal Police reports on its official website, where people can also view an interactive map of the most frequent areas with needle findings.
In 2017 police officers had to collect used needles most often on Husovice Street. In total, they found 180 used needles there. The second worst area was Svitavská ulice with 164 needles. Svitavské nábřeží was third on this sad list with 104 needles.
