Brno, Jun 18 (BD) – With the arrival of summer teratures, the amount of small organisms in the natural bodies of water increases. Plankton, in particular, phytoplankton (especially cyanobacteria), negatively affects the quality of bathing water. Individual clones (clusters) of cyanobacteria are visible to the naked eye. “As a rule, their concentration gradually increases during July and August and fluctuates according to the flow and wind directions and intensity,” The Regional Hygienic Authority of South Moravia (KHS JmK), based in Brno, reports on its official website.
According to the KHS JmK website, the sampling inspection is carried out by the hygienists in Brno on weekly basis. Laboratories control the biological and microbiological properties of water. The visible pollution is evaluated directly on site.
The public can find a complete online catalogue of places in South Moravia and results of the hygienic tests on the website of KHS JmK here. For a simple understanding, each reservoir in the catalogue is marked with one of five emoticons or a cross (=not inspected). The emojis have different colors, from blue (=best quality) to black (=dangerous health risk).
None of the water reservoirs in South Moravia has been evaluated a health risk in 2018 yet; all the places in the KHS JmK list are marked with blue or green smiley face (=water is suitable for bathing but with slightly deteriorated quality).
For example, Brno’s Reservoir is regularly inspected on five sites. Currently, all of them offer water suitable for bathing (blue or green icon).
The last round of inspections in South Moravia took place on June 4, 5, and 11.
