Brno, Dec 12 (BD) – The Bethlehem light symbolises friendship, peace and the birth of Jesus Christ. For the 30th consecutive year, Czech scouts will go to Austria and bring the light back with them to Brno.

The ecumenical worship service will take place on Saturday, December 15, 2018, in Mariendom in Linz. From there, the scouts will bring it to the Czech Republic on the train 3806 Donau Moldau. The Scout couriers will be delivering the light to locations across the country on Sunday, December 16. On the same day, the Bethlehem light will be welcomed at three cathedrals: in Brno at Petrov at 9 pm, in Prague at St. Vitus Cathedral, and in Olomouc at St. Wenceslas at 10 am.

This modern tradition emerged in Austria in 1986 (see our article from last year: “Czech Scouts Bring Bethlehem Light to Brno from Vienna”). The light is lit in Bethlehem where Jesus Christ was born and transported to Austria. The tradition has since spread to two dozen other countries. The light appeared in the Czech Republic for the first time in 1989, shortly after the collapse of the communist regime.

Brno Transport Company will join the tradition this year. “Visit our Bethlehem tram on Saturday, December 22, 2018, and take the festive Bethlehem light home,” said Hana Tomaštíková from the Brno Transport Company (DPMB). With a lantern or a candle, visitors are welcome to a decorated tram that will stop in the following places:

10.00 – 11.00 on Nádražní Street (in front of the Czech Post Building)

11.15 – 12.45 náměstí Svobody

13.00 – 14.00 Mendlovo náměstí

14.30 – 16.00 again on náměstí Svobody

During the last week of Advent, there will also be a stand with Bethlehem light on Dominikánské náměstí.
