June 30 (CTK) – The Czech Republic remains in 22nd position in an international comparison of quality of life, based on data on the state of social and economic development and the environment quality, Michal Malysa, from the Deloitte press department, told CTK yesterday.
He said out of 128 countries compared, the best result was scored by Denmark and the worst by the Central African Republic.
The rankings are released every year by Deloitte together with the Social Progress Imperative NGO.
The Czech Republic scored the best results in terms of essential human needs, particularly food and basic medical care, the level of drinking water and hygiene, accommodation and personal security.
It also gained a high assessment for availability of fundamental education.
On the other hand, the level of toleration has been decreasing in the Czech Republic, which ranks it among countries such as Botswana, the press release says.
“The Czech Republic has kept at a high position for several years. It shows that the economic and social development are two important factors that support one another,” Josef Kotrba, president of Deloitte in the Czech Republic, said.
However, he said economic growth does not always guarantee development of society.
Kotrba said, for instance, the United States is the richest G7 country in terms of per capita GDP, yet it is strongly lagging behind comparative countries in a half of the categories assessed. This concerns education, health care and personal security, Kotrba said.
The Social Progress Index annually assesses countries in 50 categories. The Czech Republic is in the group of 24 with a high level of social development, which includes the United States, Japan and France.
Of the new EU countries, only Slovenia has a better position, while the Czech Republic has a better ranking than Italy, Cyprus, Slovakia or Greece, for instance.
The first three positions went traditionally to the Scandinavian countries – Denmark, Finland and Iceland this year. Chad, Afghanistan and the Central African Republic are at the bottom.
