Brno, Dec 19 (BD) – According to estimates based on the Analysis of the Drug Situation in the City of Brno in 2016, Brno is home to approximately 1,600 problem drug users, about 1,350 of whom routinely inject illegal substances.

The Contact Center is one of the busiest services provided by Podané ruce. Last year 711 clients visited the center; these clients are typically people who regularly inject methamphetamine (pervitin).

Interest among drug users in safer injections of addictive substances is increasing every year, as evidenced by the continuous increase in the number of syringes exchanged. In 2017, 243,000 syringes were handed out and 225,000 were received in exchange. Thanks to the syringe exchange program, the spread of diseases like Hepatitis B and C and HIV has long been under control.

“Reducing risks through the replacement of injection materials and substitution programs play a crucial role in working with drug addicts. Using substitution substances can lead to reduced doses and complete abstinence for motivated clients. My main goal, as Director of Podané ruce, is to develop the most up-to-date assistance services for drug users so that every citizen who comes to us gets the help they need, and to help reduce the impact of the problem of dependence on the local community,” said Jindřich Vobořil, a former drug coordinator who returned to the post of director of Podané ruce in the summer, on Monday December 17.

This year, Podané ruce have introduced a peer assistants program on the streets of Brno.

Since 2016, the trust has been running Hard&Smart, a program focusing on excessive alcohol use at concerts and music festivals in the Czech regions. The service helps alleviate the negative effects of drinking alcohol, recreational drug use and other high-risk behaviour. According to Podané ruce, excessive use of alcohol has one of the worst social impacts on a society.
