A major concern around the public fountains and water facilities has recently arisen. People litter, urinate or wash their clothes in the city fountains.
Fountains were originally purely functional, connected to springs or aqueducts and provided drinking water and water for bathing and washing clothes. Nowadays, the public fountains are used for recreation and for entertainment. Many of Brno’s fountains are small-scale works of art with a fascinating history.
The fountains and public water facilities must regularly undergo maintenance in order to remove pollen, dust, leaves and waste thrown there by people.
Littering, washing clothes or children throwing dirt in the fountain water result in many fountains to be shut down for longer periods of time, drained, cleaned, and refilled.
The cost of maintenance of the public water facilities in Brno is up to half a million a year, reports Brněnský Deník.
Jane Derková from the Regional Health Authority warns that the water in the fountains is not suitable for swimming since it contains natural microorganisms, bird’s waste or it’s polluted by human activity.
