Brno, July 13 (BD) – Neurologists from the Institute of Technology at Masaryk University have launched a research that will determine the efficiency of certain types of therapies that target degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.
In cooperation with Hungarian and American researchers, the Czech team will examine the brain activity and its relation to the speech cognitive abilities of people with different languages and cultures.
Researchers will examine different parts of the brain that get involved in writing and speaking of various languages and study what impact different languages have on the patients.
The goal of the project is to find the difference or absence in results of common treatments applied to people of various languages with the same disease. Studying people with the same brain impairment, yet of different cultures, is hoped to localize the brain sections responsible for the deterioration.
The team from Brno and Szeged University will monitor Czech and Hungarian speaking patients and volunteers; the specialists from the University of Arizona will examine English speakers.
Speech and language pathologists and neurologists have known for about 100 years that certain areas in the left hemisphere of the brain are centrally involved in language functions. There are however considerably less studies on use of various languages resulting in brain disorders.
