Brno, July 29 (BD) – Once again the quality of air in Brno is questioned. This time environmental expert and activist Miroslav Šuta is warning about the overly polluted air in Brno in his recent report published this week by the news server Idnes.cz.
Up to 600 could have been hospitalized for serious heart and vessel diseases and 150 more for respiratory diseases caused by polluted air this year in Brno. The numbers are results of a special calculation based on data collected by Czech Hydrometeorological Institute from 2011 to 2015.
“Because of the presence of dust particles in the air, many people spend days lying in bed, out of school or work,” the activist explains. “We have no data on how many people actually died or got sick. Thanks to this analysis, we have an approximate idea of how much that could have been theoretically, ” added Šuta.
He estimates that average Brno citizen spends two days in bed every year due to the problems caused by the polluted air.
Activists call for drastic measures against air pollution and extensive traffic restrictions in the city center. One of the solutions is the use of so-called carpooling or bike sharing services in the city (you can read about these options in our article Better Air and Less Traffic Jams – Discover Shared Cars and Bikes in Brno).
The particulate matter (dust) in the air already exceeded the norm of 35 days per year set by Law on Health Protection in July in the city of Brno (Read more here: Brno Has Already Reached Its Yearly Pollution Limit).
Dust particles are dangerous for human body. “The largest ones settle in the nasal cavities, the smallest can get into the brain or lungs,” Šutta pointed out. This can cause various illnesses; from respiratory problems to brain bleeds, or pulmonary embolism.
