Brno, Sep 28 (BD) – One of the gas cylinders in a van parked in the yard of the building of Masaryk University exploded and the whole vehicle got on fire.

The explosion took place shortly before 13:00. The firemen localized the incident at 13:13.

The early information described the blast as the result of an explosion of a gas-powered car.

“I am in Brno on an academic visit, and just heard a loud explosion in the city centre, close to my hotel. Smoke pouring from a building. Lots of sirens and fire engines around,” one of the bystanders told Brno Daily.

According to a university spokesperson, the car belonged to the workers repairing the heat exchange station inside the building.

Firemen of South Moravia (HZS JmK) reported that two people suffered injuries during the blast.

It was a great luck that the accident happened on a public holiday. Every day, hundreds of university students go to the cafeteria located in the building.

The firemen left the place at 14:10. Police are now looking into the matter.
