Prague, Oct 29 (CTK) – The Czech national power company CEZ Distribuce declared the state of calamity in seven regions over an accumulation of breakdowns in voltage caused by a disastrous windstorm today, CEZ spokesman Sona Holingerova has told journalists.
At present, the state of calamity is valid in the Karlovy Vary, Hradec Kralove, Liberec, Pardubice, Plzen, Central Bohemia and Usti regions, Holingerova said.
Hundreds of thousands of households are without electricity.
“Breakdown gangs are in the terrain, trying to repair the mains and renew the supplies of electricity to the clients,” she added.
The strong wind has been devastating in most of the Czech Republic since early in the morning, causing the biggest damage in its western and northern parts.
“At present, the worst situation is in the Hradec Kralove, Usti and Central Bohemia regions,” Holingerova said at around 8:00.
The situation is somewhat calmer in central and northern Moravia, she added.
“We presume that the wind will move to this locality, too,” Holingerova said.
The falls of trees and branches in the mains are the most frequent causes of the outages, she added.
In the Vysocina Region, a woman died after a tree fell on her in the morning.
