Brno, Feb 27 (BD) – For the first time this winter, Brno municipality police officers were able to go to the reservoir of Brno to check the thickness of the ice yesterday. So far, conditions have not been safe enough even for measurement itself.
“In some places, the ice thickness was about ten centimeters, but the city police are monitoring other locations where the ice does not even reach four centimeters,” Brno municipality police spokesman Jakub Ghanem reported yesterday.
“From the shore, the areas of thin ice are not apparent, so walking on the ice can be very treacherous”, Ghanem warns.
On Saturday, February 24, Robert Vystrčil from Prygl.net, a website about Brno’s Reservoir [or “Prygl” in Brno’s slang], reported: “We will see if the frosts that have finally arrived at the ‘Prygl’ will last long enough to improve the situation.”
Monday’s post on a Facebook page by the same author titled “Brněnská přehrada a okolí” [Brno reservoir and surroundings] is more optimistic: “According to visitors to the dam, the ice thickness near the bank at Rakovec and Kozina is between 8 and 10cm. However, the city police consider it safe for walking only at a thickness of 12cm or more.”
Hence, walking is not recommended on the ice of the reservoir yet. “Due to the weather forecast, it has not been ruled out that the measured values will increase dynamically in the following days,” Ghanem concluded.
Results of ice measurements are regularly published on the website of the Municipal Police in Brno and on their Facebook page.
