Brno, Mar 19 (BD) – Strong winds hit Moravia and other parts of the Czech Republic last weekend. From Saturday morning to Sunday morning, South Moravian firefighters dealt with 99 incidents.
“Over the last 24 hours, we have intervened at 99 places. We have assisted with the removal of 51 fallen trees, damaged roofs, and billboards. This is four times our daily average,” said David Jirouš from the South Moravian Fire Department (HZS JmK).
The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute announced a strong wind weather alert valid from March 17, 6 am to March 18, 8 pm in the following regions: South Moravian Region, Moravian-Silesian Region, Olomouc Region, and Zlín Region.
The largest proportion of the damage caused by the strong winds, a total of 21 incidents, was reported in Brno-venkov. “Road I / 54 had to be closed on Saturday night because the falling trees threatened even the assisting firefighters,” Jirouš explained in the official press release.
