The new 191-spot car park on the corner of Besední and Veselá Streets in the centre of Brno (map), which was built at a cost of a quarter of a billion Czech crowns, remains inaccessible. The Civic Democratic Party (ODS), currently the official opposition in the Municipal Government (Zastupitelstvo), has proposed putting them into operation before construction begins on the future cultural centre that will be above the underground car park. Brno, May 22 (BD) – Yesterday, Czech TV reported on their Twitter that the “political party ODS is ‘outraged’ by the fact that it is still not possible to park in the new underground car park behind the Besední dům,” where the future Janáček Cultural Centre will stand.
The new car park was handed over to the city for management in February, but the city decided that it should not be used until the construction of Janáček Cultural Centre has been completed, Czech TV further explained.
However, according to Petr Kratochvíl (ODS), the car park could be used until the start of construction. Deputy Mayor Matěj Hollan (Žít Brno party) said that the completion and subsequent dismantling of car park technologies, followed by their re-installation once Janáček Cultural Centre has been built, is too expensive and inefficient, Brno local online news Brněnská drbna reported this morning.
