Brno, Jul 13 (BD) – These large underground water retention tanks serve as a reservoir for a mix of rain and sewage water that overflows from public sewers during long periods of heavy rainfall. The retention tanks protect the spontaneous overflow of the waste water into rivers. The tanks retain and then gradually release the extra sewage water back to the sewage plant as soon as its capacity allows. As a result, natural waterways and reservoirs of drinkable water in the area are cleaner.

The current system of retention tanks covers approximately half of the Brno area. The new retention reservoirs should help to cover the entire city. The new Královky retention reservoir will have a capacity of approximately 22.5 thousand m³. Červený mlýn’s capacity is planned at about 26 thousand m³, according to Radka Loukotová from the City’s press centre.

The estimated value of the public contract is 1.7 billion CZK and its implementation could begin as early as the end of this year. The construction is due to be completed by the end of 2023, Loukotová added.
