Brno, Jul 27 (BD) – This year’s graduates from the University of Defense in Brno (UO) celebrated their graduation in náměstí Svobody on Friday from 8 to 9:30 am. As part of the festivities, two aerial formations flew over the square during the morning. The formations consisted of Mi-17 helicopters from the air base in Náměšť nad Oslavou and two JAS-39 Gripen combat aircraft from the base in Čáslav.

The graduation ceremony then continued in the assembly hall of the University of Technology on Technická Street on Friday afternoon, with the presentation of diplomas to students of bachelor and master degree programs.

The University of Defence has a special ceremony called “vyřazení” [roughly translates as “elimination”]. All military graduates are symbolically “eliminated” by the best student of the University of Defense. The “vyřazení” ceremony ends with a march of recent graduates. The graduates also sing “Sloužíme vlasti” [“We Serve the Homeland”] and throw their caps into the air.

A rehearsal for the event took place in náměstí Svobody on Thursday evening.
