A statue of Emperor Joseph II was proposed for the recently reconstructed Dominikánské náměstí. A life-size model of the statue was placed in the square through the summer to help citizens decide whether it would become permanent, in an online vote that ran until August 15. Brno, Sep 5 (BD) – A total of 1170 valid votes were cast in the poll, according to City’s website. 545 people voted in favor of the statue of Joseph II in the square, while 625 people said “no”. However, the article on the website concludes that “what will eventually be in the square will be decided by the city authorities.”
Opinions differ over whether to move Joseph, the bronze statue currently located on the premises of the Černovice psychiatric hospital, or to install a brand new piece of artwork.
Joseph II was Holy Roman Emperor from 1765, and ruler of the Habsburg lands (the Austro-Hungarian Empire) from 1780, until his death in 1790.
