At its last August meeting, Brno City Council approved the updated Territorial Energy Plan for the City of Brno [“Energetická koncepce statutárního města Brna”]. The aim was to find solutions to ensure the security of the city’s energy supply, improve the economy of energy use and, last but not least, promote the sustainable development of energy in the coming years. Brno, Sep 10 (BD) – The Council has decided to implement a so-called “strategy of fuel development and conversion.” This strategy is primarily aimed at maximizing the use of renewable and secondary sources of energy (such as energy from waste) and combined production of electricity and heat. The main expected outcome is a significant increase in energy production from renewable and secondary sources, including solar energy, biomass energy, or energy from residual waste, which, in an ideal scenario, could be almost doubled by 2050. At the same time, the plan also aims to modernize and make the most of existing functional systems.
The new energy plan for Brno anticipates a drastic reduction of air pollution. Reducing primary energy consumption is expected to bring significant reductions in emissions of pollutants. “The development of central heating supply in combination with the promotion of clean renewable resources will enable the use of advanced technologies to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 60% [2050 compared to 2016, editor’s notice],” said Deputy Mayor for the Environment Martin Ander in an official press release on August 28, 2018.
“In the period up to 2050, electricity consumption will increase by almost one fifth. On the other hand, it is most likely to reduce the consumption of natural gas as the primary source of energy by up to 35%. Current customers are expected to reduce their consumption, however, this decrease will compensate for the need for supplies for newly built objects. Development of the city of Brno, in terms of the construction of new housing and amenities, is expected in approximately 44 locations,” said Petr Hladík, Chairman of the Board of Teplárny Brno [Brno Heating company] and First Deputy Mayor, in a press release.
Now the Plan needs to pass the local government [“Zastupitelstvo”].
