With the end of the holidays, the City of Brno has closed the online form for submitting proposals for the name of Brno’s new railway station. Residents can now vote for their favourite name at www.soutez.nasnovejnadr.cz. Voting opened last Saturday and will continue until the end of September. Brno, Sep 10 (BD) – From the ten names selected in the September vote, residents will then pick the winning proposal in October. The process of choosing the new name will end on the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the independent Czechoslovak Republic. The first round is open to everybody, but each vote has to be made using a unique email address. The second vote in October is open exclusively to those with an account at brnoid.cz and those who submit their vote in person at the municipal registry.
During the summer, 3,329 proposals were submitted, of which 1,501 were unique. 1,257 names were duplicates and 571 were excluded because they did not meet the competition rules (names in foreign languages or including bad language). “Of all the names that have been submitted, most of them use a variation of “Brno hlavní nádraží”. We are very curious to see in the final vote if a traditional suggestion or some more creative alternative will win,” said Brno Mayor Petr Vokřál in an official press release.

Many of the names are humorous or ironic in nature, including suggestions such as “Brrrr. No…”, “Vienna-North”, “Prague-East”, “Planet Brno”, “Brno – Šalingrad”, “Station Brno Bombastic”, or “Pink Unicorn Station”. Even “Trainstationy McTrainstationface”, inspired by “Boaty McBoatface”, which caused a dilemma between the credibility of the organisation and the burden of public opinion in Great Britain, made it to the final list. Other proposals used words from Brno’s unique local dialect, known as “hantec”, the most common being “štatl” [city center], “rola” or “nádr” [hantec words for Brno’s main train station]. Other popular submissions included the names of local personalities, such as composer Leoš Janáček or strongman Franta Kocourek, or the ice hockey club Kometa.
