Brno International Airport in Tuřany handled a record number of passengers this summer. Brno, Sep 24 (BD) – The increase in the number of passengers was no surprise; according to Czech local daily newspaper Brněnská drbna, nearly 180 flights were scheduled for the holiday season (“Brněnské letiště má za sebou nejúspěšnější léto v historii”, Sep 21, 2018). The airport also invested money to shorten queueing times this summer. “For example, the number of security checkpoints was increased, so it will be possible to process more passengers through security in a shorter time,” said Radomír Janík, head of the Airport Security Department, in a press release.
Due to the limited number of regular flights also operating outside the holiday season, many Brno residents have recently decided to fly from the relatively close airport in Bratislava instead. According to statistics released on May 11, during the first four months of this year, 506,000 passengers passed through Bratislava’s Letisko M. R. Štefánika Airport.
In Brno, around 470,000 people passed through Tuřany last year, compared to about 418,000 in 2016. However, the airport’s annual record number of passengers came in 2011 (557,952 passengers). Brno Airport will start operating a new flight this Autumn, to Bergamo Airport near Milan. The first flight is scheduled for October 28, the centenary of Czechoslovakia, as announced on the City of Brno’s Twitter account earlier today. The new flight will be operated by Ryanair.
